Job Description

The Lactation Consultant provides clinical expertise, support, and education to nursing dyads within a family centered care environment. Regularly participates in professional activities including lectures, staff training, and research. Required experience includes a minimum of two years in direct patient care as a registered nurse, registered dietitian, occupational therapist, or speech/language pathologist, with experience providing lactation assistance and education to breastfeeding mothers. Preferred experience includes NICU experience as a lactation consultant or in the individual’s discipline and two or more years as a lactation consultant. Education requirements include graduation from an accredited program in nursing, dietetics, occupational therapy, or speech/language pathology and completion of a lactation training program with eligibility to take the International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant exam within 18 months of hire. Specialized skills required include knowledge of family-centered patient care, excellent customer satisfaction skills, communication skills, and ability to provide safe care within licensure and regulatory requirements. Licensure required includes International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) within 18 months of employment, Basic Life Support (BLS), and clinical licensure in RN, RD, OT, or SLP. The work environment involves light to moderate physical demands and exposure to various sensory and environmental conditions.
